Entrepreneurial Traits: Do You Have What It Takes? Part 2

Tenacity

Becoming and entrepreneur is easily compared to an uphill run, you have to be willing to push through obstacles, live with uncertainty, and avoid the urges to throw in the towel. You have to envelope perseverance, persistence, determination, commitment, resilience, and of course tenacity.

You also need to be willing to look failure in the eye, sometimes daily, and determine that because you failed at this particular idea doesn’t mean that you or your original thinking makes you a failure. You simply need to pull up the boot straps and keep trying. Giving up is failure, changing or reinventing is success. Unfortunately, sometimes, those trials mean that you have to give up what you’ve built, like your company, and start over from scratch. Don’t let failure define your life or its course.

Taking risks is the backbone of any entrepreneurial venture. You have to have the mindset, going in, that this has just as much of a chance to fail as it has to be successful. Failing builds character and is a lot like a baby learning to walk. You will fail, to one degree or another. How you get back up is what shapes and molds you. Just like in Greek Mythology, Sisyphus, who was a greedy king, was doomed in Hades to roll a huge stone up the hill only to have it roll all the way back down each and every try. I’m certainly not accusing you of being greedy, even though I don’t think that’s a bad trait while trying to grow your business, I’m saying yes, just like Sisyphus, you will quite often feel the same way. All of your efforts are thwarted no matter how hard you try. This describes the first couple of years as you build your business. Do you think you have the stick-to-it-iveness to carry on in-spite of the pitfalls? It’s gumption, way down deep in the pit of your stomach. Dig in and you Will Succeed!
